Brian Sheppard joined the University of Minnesota football staff in February 2020 and is the team’s Offensive Quality Control.
Sheppard brings extensive coaching experience to Minnesota, as he has been an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at three different institutions since 2012.
Sheppard comes to Minnesota from VMI where he was the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach for two seasons. In 2019, VMI’s offense featured a 3,000-yard quarterback, a 1,000-yard running back and a 1,000-yard wide receiver. Quarterback Reece Udinski set school single-season records in passing yards (3,276) and completions (206). He threw for 19 touchdowns, which was one shy of the 20 he passed for in 2018 when he tied the school record.
In 2017, he was the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Northern Arizona and helped lead the Lumberjacks to an FCS playoff berth. He mentored quarterback Case Cookus who threw for 3,413 yards and 22 touchdowns while the offense averaged 30.2 points per game.
Sheppard was the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Indiana State from 2013-16, He was also carried the title Assistant Head Coach the last two seasons with the Sycamores.
He helped guide the Sycamores to 2014 FCS Playoffs. That marked Indiana State’s first playoff appearance since 1983, as well as the program’s first playoff win since 1983. Sheppard was part of a historic turnaround in 2014 as Indiana State went from 1-11 in 2013 to eight wins, and a Second Round FCS Playoff appearance in 2014.
Sheppard mentored a pair of All-Conference signal callers while coaching the Sycamore’s quarterbacks. Mike Perish finished his 2014 All-MVFC with 3,777 Yards Passing (No. 1 MVFC), 347 completions, 61.6% completion percentage and 27 total touchdowns. Perish finished No. 1 MVFC in passing, No. 3 MVFC in total offense and No. 4 nationally in passing on the way to the Sycamore’s best season in 35 years. In 2015, Matt Adam finished the year with 2,509 total offense and earned Honorable-Mention All-Conference.
He spent the 2012 season as the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Willamette and his offense broke numerous records on the way to a historic season. The Bearcats finished the season ranked No. 4 in the nation in passing offense, No. 10 in total offense and No.13 in red zone offense.
Sheppard has also spent time at Alderson-Broaddus, West Virginia Wesleyan, UCLA, New Mexico State, and Tulsa.
He played quarterback at Saddleback Junior College (Calif.), Southeastern Louisiana University (also played wide receiver), and Baker University (Kansas) where he graduated in 2006 with a degree in business.
Sheppard and his wife, Victoria, have a daughter Sophie and a son Brady.
