John Schaekel is the Director of Recruiting / Minnesota High School Liaison for the University of Minnesota football program.

The 2025 season will be his 15th on staff. He assisted player personnel efforts during his first year on staff and then served as an assistant coordinator of recruiting operations for six seasons before being promoted to recruiting coordinator after the 2017 season. 

Prior to joining the Minnesota staff, he was the linebackers coach at Coffeyville Community College in 2010. He was also the defensive coordinator at Rochester Community and Technical College in Minnesota in 2009.

During 2007 and 2008, Schaekel served at the defensive graduate assistant at Northwestern State University in Louisiana, working with linebackers and the defensive line.

He began his coaching career at Midwestern State University in 2006, serving as the defensive graduate assistant and coaching outside linebackers.

Schaekel holds a bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University (2006), where he played safety for the football team. He also holds a master's degree from Northwestern State University (2009).

Schaekel grew up in St. Paul, Minn., and attended Concordia Academy in Roseville before moving to Texas and finishing high school outside of the Houston area at Concordia Lutheran.

Schaekel and his wife Sarah were married in 2014. They have three sons, Nolan, Liam and Benjamin.
