Former University of Minnesota runner Paul Hilsen is entering his first season as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater in 2013.
A four-time letter winner as a student-athlete for Steve Plasencia, Hilsen competed at the NCAA Championships as a senior in 2011 and helped Minnesota to a 16th-place finish as a team. The Gophers alum also competed in track & field for Minnesota, running the mile, the 1,500 meters and the 3,000 meters. During his time with the Gophers, Minnesota won a total of five Big Ten track & field championships (three indoor, two outdoor). As a prep, Hilsen was a five-time all-state honoree in cross country/track & field for Lakeville South High School.
A native of Lakeville, Minn., Hilsen graduated from Minnesota with a degree in mechanical engineering.
