Winny Brodt Brown returns to Minnesota as an assistant coach for the 2026–27 season, bringing with her one of the most accomplished and influential resumes in the history of women’s hockey.
A trailblazer in the sport, Brodt Brown was the inaugural recipient of the Ms. Hockey Award in 1996 before going on to a standout collegiate career that included WCHA Defensive Player of the Year honors and recognition as a Patty Kazmaier Award finalist. She began her collegiate career at New Hampshire, where she won a national championship as a freshman and earned tournament MVP honors, before transferring to Minnesota and becoming one of the program’s foundational players.
With the Gophers, Brodt Brown ranks second all-time among defenders in program history with 134 points and third with 41 goals, helping lead Minnesota to its first national championship. She also represented the United States internationally, earning a silver medal at the IIHF World Championships.
Brodt Brown enjoyed a 14-year professional playing career, highlighted by a Clarkson Cup championship in 2010 and an Isobel Cup title in 2019 with the Minnesota Whitecaps. She was inducted into the University of Minnesota M Club Hall of Fame in 2021 and most recently captured a Walter Cup championship as a scout with the Minnesota Frost in 2024.
Off the ice, she is the founder of OS Hockey Training, where she has helped place more than 500 athletes into NCAA Division I programs. She has also played a significant role in the development of the Upper Midwest High School Elite League and has been recognized nationally for her contributions to the sport, earning the AHCA Ice Hockey Founders Award in 2024 and the Minnesota National Girls and Women in Sports Day Special Merit Award in 2025.
