Benito Cecenas

Benito Cecenas joined the University of Minnesota staff in May 2023 as an Assistant Director of Athletic Performance. He is the performance coach for the women's soccer and men's swimming programs.

Cecenas comes to the Gophers after two years at the University of Montana where he served as a Graduate Assistant Performance Coach and earned a Master of Science degree in Health and Human Performance. While at Montana he designed and implemented performance programs for women’s soccer, women’s tennis, women’s golf, and cross country.

Prior to Montana, Cecenas served as an Assistant Performance Coach at the University of Vermont working with men’s Soccer, women’s Soccer, women’s ice hockey and swimming & diving. Before this role at Vermont he completed his first master’s degree in Athletic Administration at William Woods University where he served as a Graduate Assistant Performance Coach working with all sport programs. Prior to his graduate studies he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Movement Sciences in 2018 from the University of Vermont. This is also where he started his coaching journey, serving as an intern and then coaching assistant with the Catamounts’ Athletic Performance department.

Cecenas is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and holds a level 1 certification from the USA Weightlifting federation.
