A California native, Rivera traded in beaches for Minnesota winters in order to become the best wrestler he could be. Rivera finished his career in Maroon and Gold with 113 victories, tying him for 29th on the Gophers all-time list.
Rivera finished his career with the best season of his life. Rivera went 34-9, including a 14-match winning streak, that saw him finish as Big Ten runner-up and an NCAA All-American. Rivera went 20-0 throughout the dual season, becoming the sixth Minnesota wrestler to reach that mark.
The 2008 All-American graduated with a degree in psychology just two months after reaching his goal. Rivera joined the Gophers support staff as an administrative assistant directly after graduating and spent multiple years working in the offices.
