Tim McCleary joined the University of Minnesota athletic department in April 2017 and is the department’s Senior Associate Athletic Director – Business Operations & Planning / Chief Financial Officer. McCleary was promoted to his current position in July 2022 after previously serving as an Associate Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director for the Department’s business and finance operations.

McCleary leads the department’s business operations, which includes the management of an annual budget of $126 million, financial reporting, internal and external audits, purchasing, contracts and travel. McCleary also manages the contract with Gopher Sports Properties, which is Minnesota’s multi-media rights partner. He previously managed the oversight of the department’s licensing and retail programs.

Prior to coming to Minnesota, McCleary was the Director of Business Operations at the University of Oklahoma from October 2010-August 2012 and was the Director of Business Operations and Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations at the University of Colorado from August 2012-April 2017. Before working in intercollegiate athletics, McCleary was an auditor at Ernst & Young and was also the Director of Accounting and Finance at the Gold Crown Foundation, which is a youth sports non-profit organization in Colorado.

McCleary earned his Bachelor of Science Business Finance degree in 2003 from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Colorado at Denver in 2014. He was formerly a licensed CPA in the state of Colorado and currently serves as President for the College Athletics Business Managers Association (CABMA).

McCleary is a native of Lakewood, Colo. He and his wife, Michelle, live in Blaine, Minn., and have four young children, Declan, Delaney, Grayson, and Kellen.
