The Gophers (1-1) trailed by 11 points with five minutes remaining when freshman point guard Trish McGhee rattled off five straight points to ignite the Minnesota rally. Georgetown's Nok Duany scored the Hoyas' last points of the game on a pair of free throws at the 2:28 mark, giving Georgetown a 57-51 lead.
Lindsay Lieser, who set a Sports Pavilion record with seven three-pointers Saturday versus Ball State, found the range once again, canning a trifecta from the right corner to move the Gophers to within three at 57-54 with 2:12 left. Lieser was fouled on the Gophers' next possession and netted two free throws to pull Minnesota to within one.
After a Georgetown miss, Minnesota's Erin Olson was fouled and calmly put the Gophers into the lead with two free throws with 36 seconds left on the clock. A Jackie Tate steal ended the next Hoya possession. Olson was fouled again and sank two more free throws to put Minnesota up 60-57.
Georgetown fired two three-pointers in the final seconds to no avail.
Lieser led all scorers with 17 points, including 4-of-7 from three-point range and was named to the all- tournament team. Olson and McGhee also finished in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Ball State defeated Fresno State, 71-70, in the Regal Classic championship game.
