The Gophers held a slim 31-29 lead at the intermission, after needing a 12-0 run late in the first half to recover from an early 11-point deficit. Cassie VanderHeyden sparked the run with two of her three first half three-point field goals.
South Alabama and Minnesota traded baskets to start the second period, with the Jaguars relying on the inside jumpers of Jamene Curd to keep pace with the Gophers. Curd's third consecutive field goal brought South Alabama to within one at 40-39 with 14:36 on the clock. That basket would be the Jaguars last for over a 13-minute period.
Minnesota outscored South Alabama 21-4 during the stretch, with a Lindsay Lieser three-pointer with 2:19 left giving the Gophers their biggest lead of the game at 59-43.
VanderHeyden and Lieser also finished in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Minnesota shot 44 percent from the field and finished with a 45-35 advantage on the boards.
