2/12/1999 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

10Cassie VanderHeyden scored a career-high 24 points, but Iowa defeated Minnesota 79-62 in a Big Ten women's basketball game. The Hawkeyes improve to 10-13, 5-8 in the Big Ten, while Minnesota drops its seventh straight game and falls to 7-16, 2-11 in the Big Ten.

VanderHeyden's 24 points are the most scored by a Gopher this season. VanderHeyden made five three-point field goals, giving her 50 triples this season and moving her into second place on Minnesota's single-season list. All five Hawkeyes scored in double figures, led by Amy Herrig's 21 points.

The Gophers started five different players than in its last game against Michigan. VanderHeyden, Mindy Hansen, Jackie Tate, Moneeke Bowden and Theresa LeCuyer started the game for Minnesota. LeCuyer hit two early layups and VanderHeyden made a three-pointer to give Minnesota a 7-3 lead two minutes into the game. Iowa scored the next nine points, six on two three-pointers by Meder, to give the Hawkeyes a 12-7 lead with 14:53 remaining in the half. Minnesota tied the game 20-20 on a LeCuyer basket, but did not take the lead for the remainder of the half. Iowa scored 12 of the final 14 points of the half to take a 38-26 lead into intermission. The Hawkeyes led by double digits for the remainder of the game.

Minnesota will play its next two games against nationally ranked opponents. The Gophers will play No. 15 Penn State on Sunday at 2 p.m. (EST), followed by a game against No. 2 Purdue on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Pavilion. Purdue clinched the Big Ten title with a 76-74 overtime win at Penn State.
