GOPHER SOFTBALL USES THREE HOMERS TO DEFEAT CAMPBELL, 7-5

GopherThe 22nd-ranked Minnesota softball team hit three home runs in a 7-5 victory over Campbell in the first game of the Triangle Classic. The win is Minnesota's third in succession and improved the Gophers' record to 6-2.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, first-year player Jordanne Nygren hit a three-run home run in the third inning, her sixth of the season, to give Minnesota a 3-2 lead. Campbell tied the game in the fourth inning, but senior shortstop Shannon gave the Gophers the lead for good in the fifth inning with a three-run blast, her second home run of the season. Katie Orth hit her first collegiate home run in the sixth inning to increase the Minnesota lead to 7-3. Campbell scored two runs in the seventh inning, but left the tying runs on base.

Michelle Harrison won her first game as a Gopher, allowing five hits in a complete game performance. Nygren, Beeler, Steph Midthun and Michelle Bennett each had two hits for Minnesota.

The Friday afternoon game between Minnesota and Virginia was rained out. The Gopher will attempt to make up that game tomorrow morning, along with regularly scheduled games against Akron and UNC-Wilmington.
