GOLDEN GOPHER BASEBALL TEAM DEFEATS PRO-ALUMNI 9-7
2/9/1999 12:00:00 AM | Baseball
Minnesota jumped ahead 4-2 in the third inning, thanks in part to a sacrifice fly by senior Robb Quinlan in the first inning, a two-run double from redshirt freshman Scott Howard in the second and a solo home run by Quinlan to lead off the third inning.
After the Pro-Alumni put up three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead, Minnesota rebounded in the bottom of the frame with five runs. Sophomore Rick Brosseau began the inning with a single and advanced to third on junior Matt Scanlon's single to left. After Adam Horton drew a walk, junior Mike Arlt stroked a two-run double to left center. With runners on second and third, pinch hitter Mark Devore collected two RBIs with a single to center on the first pitch he faced. Horton would advance to third on a hit by sophomore Josh Holthaus and would be driven in by redshirt freshman Jon Nuss with a single to right field.
The Pro-Alumni's only other threat came in the seventh. With singles by Mark Merila and Terry Steinbach, the Pro-Alumni drew three consecutive walks which brought in two runs and narrowed the lead to 9-7. With the bases loaded though, Craig Selander struck out and Brian Raabe flied out to end the rally.
Junior left-hander Frank Wagner earned the victory after relieving starter Brad Pautz. Pautz pitched four innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits. Sophomore Jason Shupe earned the save after he allowed just one hit and no runs in 1.2 innings.
For the Pro-Alumni, shortstop Steve Huls, an infielder in the Minnesota Twins' minor league system, finished four-for-four at the plate with an RBI and a walk.
