GOLDEN GOPHER BASEBALL TEAM DEFEATS NORTHERN ILLINOIS 9-2

MetroSenior Brad Pautz (1-1) threw seven strong innings for the Golden Gopher baseball team (8-6) in a 9-2 victory over Northern Illinois (1-6) at the Metrodome Saturday night. The right-hander retired the first eight batters he faced and finished with two runs allowed, one earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks. The two teams will meet in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Redshirt freshman Scott Howard paced the Golden Gophers with three hits in four at-bats with three stolen bases, two RBIs and a run scored. Senior Robb Quinlan added two hits including a triple, a RBI and three runs scored.

Minnesota jumped ahead early with two runs in the first and one in the second. Junior Mike Arlt got things started in the first inning with a triple to right field. After Quinlan walked, junior Matt Scanlon grounded out to second base to drive in Arlt. Quinlan then scored from second on a wild pitch. The Golden Gophers increased the lead to 9-0 with six runs in the middle three innings.

The Huskies finally got on the board in the seventh inning. With a runner on first, pinch hitter Pat Kerrigan doubled to left center. With runners on second and third, designated hitter Rafael Bombino drove in the two runs with a single to left field.

Sophomore Brad Gavelek (0-1) took the loss for the Huskies as he allowed five earned runs on six hits with five walks and a strikeout.
