Neels Breaks Career HBP Record, Gophers Down Bison 12-3

4/21/2026 10:56:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN – The University of Minnesota baseball team welcomed North Dakota State University for a Tuesday mid-week tonight, downing the Bison 12-3 on a record breaking evening at Siebert Field

Caden Capomaccio picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minnesota. The right-hander went two shutout innings without giving up a hit, allowing no walks and striking out two. Josh Kirchhoff also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Gophers, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.

At the plate, the Golden Gophers were paced by Charlie Sutherland, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, two walks and three RBIs. Sam Hunt compiled a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. Weber Neels also helped out for Minnesota, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a home run and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gophers got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff home run off the bat of Jack Spanier and a sacrifice fly from Easton Richter.

The Gophers then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the second inning after the Bison cut it to 2-1. A pair of home runs surged Minnesota ahead, building to a 6-1 advantage with a three run homer from Charlie Sutherland and a solo homer from Weber Neels.

Minnesota kept North Dakota State scoreless before building their lead to 7-1 the following inning, scoring on a double steal situation with runners on first and third.

The Bison gained ground, closing the gap to 7-3 until Minnesota added some insurance in the sixth. The Gophers pushed across two runs when a single from Ty Allen scored Sutherland and Neels, bringing the score to 9-3 in favor of Minnesota.

The Gophers held North Dakota State off the scoreboard before building on their lead even further to 12-3 in the eighth inning, adding a three run home run from Sam Hunt to their total.

The Bison could not get any closer before the end, as the Gophers coasted to the 12-3 win.

NEELS BREAKS CAREER HBP RECORD

After tallying two hit by pitches tonight, Weber Neels has officially broken the Golden Gophers' career HBP record with 43. Neels will look to build upon his new record throughout Minnesota's final 13 games of the season.
