MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball team kicked off their three game weekend series against Northwestern University tonight, taking down the Wildcats 13-1 in seven innings at Siebert Field.
Joe Sperry got the win out of the bullpen for Minnesota. The right-hander went 4.2 shutout innings, giving up three hits, no walks and striking out seven.
Jack Bello went 3-for-3 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with four RBIs. Weber Neels added to the power-hitting performance by going 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. Jack Mosh also chipped in for the Golden Gophers, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly to left field from Ty Allen.
The Wildcats failed to push any runs across before the Gopher offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Minnesota picked up a run on the first of Jack Bello's home runs over the left field wall tonight, bringing the score to 2-0 in favor of Minnesota.
Northwestern narrowed Minnesota's lead to 2-1 before the Gophers stretched the advantage to 5-1 in the third inning. The Gophers recorded three runs in the frame on a pair of singles from Jack Mosh and Davis Hamilton.
Minnesota held the Wildcats scoreless before building on their lead in the fifth inning. Weber Neels left the yard over the left field wall for a three run home run to get things going in the frame. A pair of runs would come across on a bases loaded hit by pitch and a balk before Jack Bello tallied a three run homer of his own to give the Gophers an eight run inning.
The score remained 13-1 for the rest of the game, as the Gophers coasted to the run-rule win in game one of the series.
