GOPHER SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAM ENDS SEASON

JASHINSKY EARNS ALL-AMERICA ACCORD IN 100 FLY - Junior Terri Jashinsky (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) was the only Minnesota swimmer to earn individual honors at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Jashinsky placed 13th in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 54.76 seconds to earn honorable mention All- America honors. She added the citation in the fly to three others earned in this year's championships in relay events. Jashinsky, the Big Ten titlest in the 100 fly, has earned a total of eight All-America awards in her career but this is her first in an individual event.
ALL FIVE RELAYS SCORE AT NATIONALS - For the first time in Minnesota history, all five of the Golden Gopher relays scored at the NCAA Championships, each earning honorable mention All-America status.
The 400 medley relay of Beth Shimanski (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson), Kate McMillan (Palatine, Ill./ Palatine), Terri Jashinsky and Jenny Hennen (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) swam a time of 3:45.95 for 16th place. Shimanski, Jashinsky and Hennen are repeat honorable mention All-Americans in the event, placing 11th in the event in 1998. It was McMillan's first All-America honor of her career.
Minnesota's 800 freestyle relay of Amy Cottrill (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), Katy Christoferson (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville), Jinny Smedstad Cedar Rapids, Iowa/JFK) and Hennen also placed 11th with a time of 7:21.57. Hennen collected her third All-America honor in this event, while for Christoferson and Cottrill it was their second. Smedstad earned the first All-America honor of her career.
The 200 freestyle relay, with the squad of Christoferson (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville), Cottrill, Jashinsky and Hennen, posted a time of 1:33.15 to place 13th in the consolation final. Cottrill, Jashinsky and Hennen earned their second All-America honor in this event. All three were members of the Gophers' 13th-place relay in 1997.
The Golden Gopher 400 freestyle relay, of Cottrill, Christoferson, Meghan Sonstegard (Sioux Falls, S.D./ Apple Valley) and Hennen finished the relay scoring, placing 15th with a time of 3:23.70. The honorable mention All-America citation was the first in this event for all four swimmers.
The 200 medley relay of Sonstegard, McMillan, Jashinsky and Cottrill captured honorable mention All- America status by placing 15th with a time of 1:43.10. Sonstegard, Jashinsky and Cottrill earned their second All-America award in the event.
