Minnesota grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a two-run single from senior Robb Quinlan in the bottom of the third inning. The Wolverines responded in the top of the fourth with four straight singles off of Golden Gopher starter Kelly Werner. Michigan scored three times in the inning with RBI singles from Mike Cervenak and Bryan Besco and a sacrifice fly from David Parrish. The Golden Gophers knotted the game at three in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by junior Mike Arlt.
With the score tied at three, the Wolverines scored five runs with two outs in the eighth. With Mike Seestedt at third, Parrish knocked him in with an infield single to short. After a single by Bill LaRosa, Rob Bobeda sent a ground ball to shortstop Rick Brosseau. Brosseau's throw to second base was not in time to get LaRosa and the Wolverines loaded the bases. With sophomore Jason Shupe called in to relieve Werner, Shupe walked the first two batters he faced and then allowed a two-run single by Brian Bush which made the score 8-3.
Putz collected his third complete game of the season and allowed just three runs on eight hits. He walked four and struck out eight. His counterpart Kelly Werner fell to 4-2 on the year and allowed seven runs (six earned) on ten hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
