MFive Minnesota (28-9, 9-3) pitchers combined on a six- hit shutout as the Golden Gopher baseball team defeated MSU-Mankato (18-9-2) 6-0 at Siebert Field. Mike Kobow (1-0) earned the victory as he made his first career appearance and start for Minnesota. The Golden Gophers travel to Indiana for a four-game Big Ten series against the Hoosiers this weekend.

Minnesota jumped ahead with a four-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from senior Aron Amundson off of Maverick starter Nick Dolan (0-1). The Golden Gophers also got a RBI single from Scott Howard and a run-scoring double from Robb Quinlan.

Kobow, a redshirt freshman from Hutchinson, Minn., pitched four innings and scattered four hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Minnesota increased the lead to six with solo home runs from Rick Brosseau in the fourth and Matt Scanlon in the fifth. Scanlon, the Big Ten Player of the Week, finished 3- for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Dolan pitched 4.1 innings for MSU-Mankato and allowed all of Minnesota's runs on nine hits. He struck out one and walked two. Relievers Keith Meyers, Scott Hanson and Mike Landkammer held the Golden Gophers to just two hits over the final 3.2 innings.
