In the first game, Purdue jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning with the help of four consecutive hits off of Pautz. The Reedsville, Wis native then settled down and held the Boilermakers to just five hits and no runs over the next six innings. Pautz (4-1) finished the complete game victory with nine hits and two runs allowed with three strikeouts.
Trailing 2-0, Minnesota finally broke through off of starter Austin Bilke in the fifth inning. The Golden Gophers scored five runs with a RBI triple by Matt Scanlon, a BRI single from Robb Quinlan and a run-scoring double from Jack Hannahan. Hannahan would later score on a sacrfice fly by Mike Arlt. Minnesota added an insurance run in the seventh en route to the 5-2 victory.
In the nightcap, Minnesota wasted little time and jumped to an early 6-0 lead off Boilermaker starter Andy Helmer. Junior Jeremy Negen started things off in the second with a three-run double with the bases loaded. Negen would score on Rick Brosseau's two-out double. Scanlon closed out the five-run inning with an RBI single.
Minnesota added a run in each of the last three innings in the 9-2 victory. Redshirt freshman Jason Kennedy led off the sixth with a solo home run and true freshman Jack Hannahan led off the seventh inning with a solo shot of his own.
Junior Dan McGrath (1-0) earned the victory for the Golden Gophers. After missing the first month of the season with a bicep injury, McGrath made his longest appearance of the season. In the five innings, he allowed just two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Minnesota and Purdue clost out their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
