Minnesota secures their first Big Ten series sweep at home since 2019
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball team closed out their weekend series against Northwestern University this afternoon, securing their first Big Ten series sweep at home in Siebert Field since 2019 with a 7-2 game three victory over the Wildcats.
Cole Selvig got the start and the win today for Minnesota. The right-hander went six shutout innings, giving up three hits, one walk and striking out five.
Weber Neels went 3-for-4 with a home run in addition to his four RBIs for the Golden Gophers. Charlie Sutherland furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Easton Richter also chipped in for Minnesota, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the sixth inning on a two run home run over the left field wall off the bat of Weber Neels.
The Wildcats failed to push any runs across before the Gopher offense got back to their scoring ways in the seventh. Minnesota exploded for five runs, tallying one on a sacrifice fly from Jack Spanier and putting up four on a two-run base hit from Neels and a two-run double off the bat of Charlie Sutherland, bringing the score to 7-0 in favor of the Gophers.
Northwestern put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minnesota still coasted to the 7-2 win to get the weekend sweep.
