GOPHERS BEAT IOWA 5-3

4-1Iowa City, Iowa---The University of Minnesota baseball team used timely hitting and solid defense to win its 15th game in the last 16 games, defeating Iowa 5-3 and raising its conference record to 4-1. All five of Minnesota's runs were unearned as the Hawkeyes committed three errors and the Golden Gophers took advantage, scoring each time Iowa had an error. Minnesota committed one error, but did not allow any unearned runs.

Kelly Werner picked up his fourth win of the season (4-1), pitching six innings and allowing two runs while striking out four batters. Jason Shupe picked up a save in relief pitching three innings and giving up just one hit, a solo homer to Brad Carlson.

Iowa tallied first with two runs in the first inning. Minnesota answered with a run in the second when Jeremy Negen scored Jack Hannahan on a fielder's choice. Neither team scored again until the Golden Gophers mounted a two-out rally in the sixth inning. Hannahan singled and Mike Arlt reached on an error. Negen walked to load the bases and freshman Jason Kennedy, the ninth-hole batter, hit a two-out, three RBI triple to Minnesota up 4-2. Iowa cut the lead to one run with homer in the eighth and the Maroon and Gold added a run in the top of the ninth on a RBI sacrifice fly by Aaron Amundson, scoring Kennedy. Shupe registered three consecutive outs in the bottom of the ninth to give Minnesota its 12th consecutive win over Iowa. The Golden Gophers are alone in second place in the Big Ten at 4-1.

The series is scheduled to resume in Iowa City tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
