The Spartans had six singles in the first two innings off of Gopher starter Kelly Werner, but managed to take just a 1-0 lead. Minnesota evened the score with a sacrifice fly from Mike Arlt. Michigan State regained the lead in the fourth on a wild pitch from Werner with the bases loaded.
Trailing 2-1 with one out in the fourth, Aron Amundson popped up to third baseman Don Watchowksi, but he dropped the ball. After Josh Holthaus was hit by a pitch, Brosseau stepped to the plate and sent starter Dan Horvath's pitch over the right field wall. In the sixth, Brosseau struck again off of Horvath with an almost identical bomb to make it 7-2. Two batters later, redshirt freshman Jason Kennedy hit a solo home run off of Horvath and Minnesota led 8-2.
Minnesota starter Kelly Werner (5-2) gave up six singles in the first two innings, but settled down to earn the victory. He allowed two runs on eight hits with a strikeout and a walk in five innings.
Michigan State scored twice in the seventh on a RBI single from Mike Pisani and a sacrifice fly from Joe Kalczynski. In the ninth, the Spartans closed the gap to 8-6 with two runs off of closer Frank Wagner, but with a runner on third with two outs, Kalczynski grounded out to third to end the game. Kyle Geswein accounted for the two runs with a double in the ninth.
Horvath (4-5) gave up all eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits with a strikeout in 5.2 innings. Reliever Josh Axelson closed things out for the Spartans and did not allowed a hit in the final 2.1 innings with two strikeouts.
