QUINLAN NAMED BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE YEAR

1990sUniversity of Minnesota senior first baseman Robb Quinlan was named Big Ten Player of the Year, the fourth Golden Gopher to earn the honor in the 1990s. In 1991, Brent Gates received the honor, in 1994 it was Mark Merila and in 1995, Shane Gunderson earned the honor.

Quinlan, a native of Maplewood, Minn., leads the the conference in all games played in batting average (.416) and hits (92) and is second in runs scored (65) and doubles (24) heading into today's Big Ten Tournament game vs. Illinois in Columbus, Ohio. This year, Quinlan became the Big Ten's all-time hits leader with 330, as well as the school's career leader in hits, home runs, doubles, runs scored, RBIs, total bases and at-bats.

Two other Golden Gophers received first team All-Big Ten honors. Senior Aron Amundson earned first team honors at designated hitter. Amundson was second in the Big Ten with a .400 batting average (62-for-155) heading into today's contest. Also receiving first team honors was senior pitcher Brad Pautz. Pautz is 8-3 on the year with a 4.64 ERA and has pitched four complete games.

Junior third baseman Matt Scanlon earned second team All-Big Ten honors. Scanlon leads the nation and the Big Ten with 30 doubles. He also leads the Big Ten with 68 RBIs. Junior pitcher Dan McGrath also earned second team All-Big Ten honors. McGrath is 6-0 with a 4.23 ERA this season.

Junior pitcher Chadd Clarey earned third team All-Big Ten honors. Clarey is 6-2 with a 5.82 ERA this season. Junior Frank Wagner also received third team honors as a relief pitcher. Wagner is 4-3 with a 5.13 ERA this season.
