Matt Scanlon was one of many heroes on the day for the Golden Gophers. He was a combined 7-for-9 with three doubles and a home run. The two teams meet for another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

In a 15-8 victory in the first game, the Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take an 8-7 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Minnesota exploded for eight runs.

The Golden Gophers tied the game on a RBI single by senior Robb Quinlan. After the Golden Gophers loaded the bases, reliever Dan Padgett walked Josh Holthaus and Minnesota led 9-8. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Jason Kennedy hit a pop-up to short left field. Left fielder Kris Musselman called off the Northwestern infielders but dropped the ball. The error cleared the bases and gave Minnesota a 12-8 lead. After a RBI single from Jeremy Negen, freshman Scott Howard hit his first career home run to put the Golden Gophers up 15-8.

Junior Vince Gangl (2-1) picked up the win in relief after he pitched 2.2 innings with two runs allowed on three hits. Northwestern starter J.J. Standring (5-3) took the loss after allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 15 hits. Quinlan finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Howard was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Scanlon led the way with a 4- for-5 performance.

In the second game, Scanlon hit a two-run home run in the first inning and senior Aron Amundson hit a grand slam in the third as Minnesota won 7-3. In the third with runners on second and third, the Wildcats walked Quinlan intentionally to load the bases. On starter Phil Rosengren's first pitch to Amundson, the designated hitter launched a shot that sailed over the right field wall. It was his ninth home run on the season.

Senior Brad Pautz (8-2) collected his fourth complete game of the year. He allowed three runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked five. Rosengren (2-6) allowed seven runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Northwestern catcher Joe Hietpas led the Wildcat effort with three home runs on the day. He finished the doubleheader 5-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored.
