MINNESOTA SHUTS DOWN ILLINOIS STATE 55-7

The University of Minnesota (3- 0) defeated the Redbirds of Illinois State (2-1) 55-7 at the Metrodome this afternoon. The Golden Gophers dominated the game from the beginning to improve their record to 3-0 heading into the bye weekend.

Senior quarterback Billy Cockerham had a career day, setting career marks in passing and rushing yards. Cockerham completed 18-of-22 pass attempts for 218 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball 17 times for 156 net yards and two touchdowns.

Cockerham scored on a 56-yard run in the first drive for the Golden Gophers to go up 7-0. He also threw a three-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Ron Johnson in the second quarter and a 29-yard touchdown pass to Antoine Henderson shortly after.

Cockerham also ran a nine-yard streak to score his second rushing touchdown in the third quarter.

Late in the third quarter junior Andy Persby connected with sophomore Jermaine Mays on a 28-yard pass play to complete the scoring for Minnesota.

Overall, Minnesota held Illinois State to just 191 total offensive yards and just nine first downs. Jack Brewer led the Golden Gophers defensively with nine tackles, while junior Karon Riley recorded two sacks for a loss of 12 yards.

Minnesota will have a bye next weekend before traveling to Evanston, Ill., to open its Big Ten season with the Northwestern Wildcats.
