Center. The University of Minnesota's men's swimming and diving team is leading the field of seven after the first day of the Minnesota Invitational being held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The women are in second, just behind Wisconsin.

Both Golden Gopher teams put in great performances at the meet this evening. Freshman Justin Mortimer started the men off right with a win in the 500 freestyle. Mortimer won the event with a time of 4:30.02. Junior Brandon Crook, freshman Adam Apprill and sophomore Karl Frisinger added 31 more points in that event, finishing fifth, sixth and 13th, respectively.

Senior Dan Croaston won the 3-meter diving competition for the men with a score of 624.70 in the finals. His nearest competitor, Sean Burnett of Wisconsin was nearly 100 points behind him with a score of 526.55. Sophomore Ben Herdt finished in fourth for Minnesota.

The men's final win of the day was an impressive swim in the 400 medley relay. The Minnesota "A" team (juniors Ben Bartell, Chad Krastins and Brandon Crook and sophomore Jeff Hackler) took first with a time of 3:20.24. The "B" team (junior Dov Malnik and sophomores Mark Dillon, Matt Taylor and Aaron Shilt) took fourth with a time of 3:26.10.

While Wisconsin dominated the women's events, the Golden Gophers were not far behind. They picked up 62.5 points in the final and consolation final of the 500 freestyle. Sophomore Dana Baum and junior Jinny Smedsted finished fifth and sixth respectively in the final, while Juleen Rodakowski finished third in the consolation final.
