MEN'S SWIMMING GETS WIN AT GEORGIA INVITATIONAL

The No. 18 University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team snuck past host No. 14 Georgia to win the 2000 Georgia Invitational. After trailing the host school by six points after two days, the Golden Gophers were able to finish strong and outscore the Bulldogs 104-89 in the final four events to win the meet, 1,039-1,031.
Minnesota won two events in the final day of competition. Sophomore Jeff Hackler won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:59.85. He beat Olympic finalist Kyle Salyards of Georgia. Junior captain Dov Malink took fourth in the event. Senior captain Dan Croaston won the the platform diving competition with a score of 530.30.
The Golden Gophers also did well in several other events. Freshman Justin Mortimer took second in the 1650 freestyle to start the day for the Gophers. He finished only .04 seconds behind the winner, Shilo Ayalon of Georgia Tech. Freshman Adam Apprill and sophomores Ryan L'Roy and Karl Frisinger came in third, fifth and seventh, respectively in the same event to score a total of 59 points for their team in just that one event. Ben Bartell and Todd Smolinski came in one right after the other in the 200 backstroke. Bartell finished second with a time of 1:47.84 and Smoliski took third with a time of 1:48.55. Ryan Plummer and Michael Melrose finished sixth and ninth to add more points to the Gopher tally.
Golden Gophers Brandon Crook, Brian Gettlefinger, Grant Butler and Mark Atwood all scored in the 100 freestyle. Junior Chad Krastins was the runner up in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.01. Matt taylor finished fourth in that event. Minnesota ended the day with a third place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Golden Gopher s are now off for the holiday season. They return to action on January 19-20, 2001 in Dallas, Texas for the Dallas Morning News Invitational.
