MINNESOTA BASEBALL TO HOST NCAA REGIONAL

Minnesota, winners of its first Big Ten regular season title since 1977, will host the 2000 Big Ten Tournament beginning Wednesday at Siebert Field. The Gophers will play their first game of the Big Ten tourney against Northwestern at 7 p.m. The winner of the 2000 Big Ten Tournament will earn an automatic berth to the 2000 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.
The Golden Gophers are one of 16 teams nationally that have been selected to host NCAA regionals and have qualified for the tournament. It is the first time since 1977 that Minnesota has hosted an NCAA regional tournament. The 1977 team, featuring future baseball hall-of-famer Paul Molitor and current Minnesota head coach John Anderson as a student coach, was the last Minnesota team to advance to the College World Series. The Golden Gophers will be making their 24th appearance in the NCAA tournament and their 11th appearance in the 19-year tenure of Anderson.
The complete bracket for the 2000 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament will be announced Monday, May 22, at 2 p.m. Central time, during a live, half-hour program on ESPN.
Schools selected to host: Arizona State, Baylor, Cal State Fullerton, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Houston, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana State, Miami (Fla.), Minnesota, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Rutgers, South Carolina, Stanford.
