MINNESOTA CAPTURES TEAM TITLE AT PSINET COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL

InvitThe University of Minnesota men's golf team fired a two-over par team score of 290 to overcome second round leaders Virginia Tech and Purdue to claim the team title of the PSINet Collegiate Golf Invitational at Dellwood Hills Golf Club in Dellwood, Minn.

Golden Gopher sophomore Wilhelm Schauman of Djursholm, Sweden (above) posted a two-under par score of 70 for a 54-hole total of four-under par 212 and his first collegiate championship. Schauman was the only golfer in the field to break par in each of the three rounds on the 7,118-yard, par 72 trak in the northeast suburb of the Twin Cities.

Sophomore Ben Meyers of Frankston, Victoria, Australia carded the low score of the final 18 holes, firing a four-under par 68 to lead the Golden Gopher charge. Minnesota started the day in third place, five shots behind both Virginia Tech and Purdue. Sophomore David Morgan of Rochester, Minn., was Minnesota's third top ten individual finisher, tying for eighth place at seven-over par 223.

Purdue's Lee Williamson, who began the day tied with Schauman for the individual lead, posted an even-par round of 72 to finish alone in second place at two-under par 214.

Virginia Tech and Minnesota were all tied with one hole remaining in the tournament. Schauman parred the 380-yard, par four finishing hole, while Johnson Wagner of the Hokies double-bogeyed the hole to give the Golden Gophers the team title.

Minnesota is back in action this weekend at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
