GOPHER WOMEN WIN ROY GRIAK INVITATIONAL

Three Minnesota runners finished in the top 13 and the Gophers won the Roy Griak Invitational for the first time in its present form.

The Griak, in its present form, has races for NCAA Division I and non-Division I schools. The Gophers won the event in 1988 when all divisions ran the same race.

Senior Corinne Nimtz placed fifth and frosh Darja Vasiljeva eighth to lead 13th-ranked Minnesota to a scored of 98 points, outdistancing unranked Yale, which scored 127 points. Seventh-ranked Arizona State was third with 140 points.

Arizona junior Tara Chaplin won the meet in 21 minutes while Arizona State junior Lisa Aguilera repeated her second-place performance of last year, finishing in 21:08.

Nimtz crossed the finish line in 21:20 while Vasiljeva was eight second back. Senior Elaine Eggleston was 13th in 21:34 and sophomore Chrissy Eid was 29th in 21:54.

Head coach Gary Wilson credited junior Victoria Moses with playing a big role in the victory. While Minnesota's top four runners kept their positions for most of the race. Moses, however, was as for back as 70th at the midpoint of the race, before putting on a charge to regain nearly 30 positions, finishing 43rd in 22:05.

As a team, Minnesota defeated three teams which were ranked higher in this week's FinishLynx Poll. Third-place Arizona State was ranked seventh while 11th-ranked Providence was fifth and 12th-ranked Oregon was seventh.

The Gophers are on the road for the first time this season on Friday when travel to Waterloo, Iowa for the Northern Iowa Invitational.
