GOPHER WOMEN DROP 66-65 DECISION TO MICHIGAN STATE

Johnson's only free throws of the game gave Michigan State a four-point cushion. Minnesota closed to within one on a Tanisha Gilbert three-pointer with 0.6 of a second left on the clock.
The Spartans scored the first six points of the game and built a 10-point lead at 20-10 midway through the first half. Minnesota battled back with a 20-5 run to take a 33-28 lead at halftime.
Michigan State (8-6, 2-1) outscored the Gophers 12-6 in the first four minutes of the second half and recaptured the lead for good on a driving layup by Vnemina Reese with 12:27 left. The Gophers managed to close within two points three times, the final time on a Lindsay Whalen free throw with 53 seconds left to play.
The Gophers were unable to capitalize on a season-low nine turnovers, shooting just under 40 percent for the game. Michigan State shot 52 percent from the field and outrebounded the Gophers by a 36-29 margin.
Gilbert led the Gophers with 16 points, while Whalen added 14. Sophomore guard Lindsay Lieser came off the bench to contribute 12 points on four three-pointers.
Minnesota (7-7, 0-3) returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 11, when it travels to Indiana to face the Hoosiers for the second time in a week. The Gophers lost a 79-76 decision to Indiana on Thursday.
