MINNESOTA MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAM OPENS SEASON

Sophomore All-American Justin Mortimer won the 1,000 yard freestyle in 9:21.56 and the 500 yard free in 4:34.10, while fellow All-Americans Todd Smolinski (100-yard backstroke-49.44), Jeff Hackler (100-yard breaststroke-56.38 and 200-yard breaststroke-2:04.74), Allen Ong (100- yard butterfly-49.82 and 50-yard freestyle-20.61) and Chad Krastins (200-yard butterfly-1:53.17) were also event champions.
Other event champions included Brandon Crook in the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.13), Terry Silkaitis in the 100-yard free (46.60). Double event champions were Diego Urreta and Ben Herdt. Urreta won the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.18) and 200 individual medley (1:52.27), while Herdt claimed both the one-meter (290.15) and three-meter (276.15) titles.
The Gophers will next be in action next Friday competing in the Alumni Meet in the Aquatic Center at 6 p.m.
