GOLDEN GOPHER BASEBALL ANNOUNCES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNERS

GopherThe University of Minnesota Williams Fund held its annual banquet for student-athletes and their families to announce its 2001-2002 endowed scholarship award winners. Five members of the Golden Gopher baseball team were honored at the ceremony. Seniors Jeremy Beaulieu and Jason Kennedy, juniors Scott Welch, C.J. Woodrow and Nate Broehm were all awarded individual scholarships.

Beaulieu, the team's leading defensive catcher from Shoreview, Minn., is slated to handle a large portion of the duties behind the plate for the Maroon and Gold in 2002.

Kennedy returns as the anchor in an experienced Golden Gopher outfield. The right fielder from Minnetonka, Minn. is a leading candidate for postseason honors this upcoming season.

Welch, a shortstop from Missoula, Mont., returns as the team's second-leading hitter and as the left side of a starting middle-infield that turned 31 double- plays last season.

Woodrow enters 2002 with the best strikeout-walk ratio on the team. The savvy right-hander from Plymouth, Minn. will be the leader on a young, but talented pitching staff.

Broehm joins the Golden Gophers as a transfer from Waldorf Junior College in Forest City, Iowa. The 6-6, 210-pound right-hander from Winona, Minn. looks to have an immediate impact on the Minnesota starting rotation.

Fifty-two student-athletes earned scholarships. A complete list of the baseball award winners follows:
