GOPHER WOMEN'S BASKETBALL RECEIVES VOTES IN AP POLL
11/27/2001 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The last time the Gophers were included in a national ranking was on January 9, 1995, when Minnesota was No. 24 in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 poll. On that date, Minnesota owned just an 8-5 record, but had defeated No. 7 Penn State and No. 19 Purdue in consecutive games. Those wins are also the last time a Minnesota team defeated a nationally ranked team.
Minnesota's 4-1 start to the 2001-02 season is the best since the Gophers posted a 5-1 mark in the 1993-94 campaign. The best start to a season in Gopher history was in 1982-83. Minnesota won its first five games that season and started the season with a 7-1 mark.
The Gophers hope to continue their winning way in two non-conference ballgames at home this week. Minnesota plays host to Northern Iowa on Wednesday at 7 p.m., then faces Dayton at 12 noon on Saturday.
