GOPHER SWIMMERS LEAD GEORGIA INVITATIONAL AFTER FIRST DAY

The seventh-ranked University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team leads the eight-team Georgia Invitational with 287 points after the first day of competition, which concluded Friday night in Athens, Ga.

The Minnesota 200-yard freestyle relay team of Chad Krastins, Brian Gettelfinger, Terry Silkaitis and Allen Ong won in an NCAA "B" standard qualifying time of 1:20.60. The 400-yard medley relay team of Todd Smolinski, Jeff Hackler, Krastins and Ong also took top honors in another "B" standard qualifying time of 3:15.07.

Sophomore All-American Justin Mortimer continued his dominate season by winning the 500-yard freestyle in 4:23.52, while Diego Urreta and Ong earned runner-up finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (1:49.85) and 50-yard freestyle (20.41), respectively.

The Invitational will resume Saturday morning at 10:30 with the 200- yard medley relay finals and continue through Sunday.
