FALL GOLF SEASON RECAP

The lone disappointment came when the Gophers were forced to cancel their own tournament, the Minnesota Collegiate Invitational, due to the terrorist attacks of September 11. The Maroon and Gold didn't even begin their fall season until Sept. 29-30 in Ann Arbor, almost a full month behind most other programs. The rust was quickly shaken as the Gophers took runner-up honors at the Wolverine Invitational.
The next week the Gophers used a career-best tournament from sophomore Justin Smith and finished in third place at the Adams Cup in Newport, R.I. Smith shot a 67 in the second round, the best round for a Gopher all autumn. He and fellow sophomore Simon Nash finished at 3- over-par in a tie for fifth.
In the Duke Golf Classic, junior Wilhelm Schauman led the way, tying for second at 6-over-par, the runner-up finish his best of the fall season. The Gophers finished fourth at the Duke Golf Club. James found his five-man lineup with the addition of sophomore David Morgan. Morgan improved all weekend and carded a 73 in the third round, tying for 44th.

Nash led the Golden Gophers with a 73.00 stroke average and carded a team-best two rounds in the 60s. Schauman was close behind at 73.70 and recorded the best individual performance for a Golden Gopher of the fall with the runner-up finish at the Duke tournament. Smith and Anderson played in all four events and registered 74.20 and 75.00 stroke averages, respectively. Morgan came on to finish with a 74.40 stroke average in the final two events.
With newfound depth and competition to finish at the top of the leaderboard, the Golden Gophers have the ingredients for a championship spring. Minnesota is back in action at the NCAA Shoot-out in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico on Feb. 24-26, 2002.
