MINNESOTA SWIMMERS ATOP GEORGIA INVITATIONAL AFTER DAY TWO

The seventh-ranked University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team leads the eight-team Georgia Invitational with 687 points after the second day of competition, which concluded Saturday night in Athens, Ga.

Minnesota dominated the 200-yard medley relay sweeping the top two places. Todd Smolinski, Jeff Hackler, Chad Krastins and Allen Ong took the top spot in 1:28.29, while Ben Bartell, Dov Malnik, Bjorn Lundin and Brian Gettelfinger claimed second place in 1:29.53. Both times were NCAA "B" standard qualifying marks.

Hackler won the 100-yard breaststroke in 54.83, while Smolinski claimed the 100-yard backstroke crown in 48.22. Both times were again NCAA "B" standard qualifying marks.

Krastins and Lundin came in second (48.07) and third (48.41), respectively in the 100-yard butterfly finals, while Matt Taylor placed second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:37.84.

The Invitational will begin its final day of competition Sunday morning at 9:30 with the 1,650-yard freestyle finals.
