MINNESOTA ATHLETES RANK AMONG WORLD'S BEST

fTwo former University of Minnesota men's track and field athletes were ranked among the top ten in their respective events in the December issue of Track & Field News.

Staffan Strand, a four-time All-American and three-time national runner-up in the high jump and Minnesota's school record holder with a leap of 7-7, was ranked seventh in the world with a season best clearance of 7-8.

Tye Harvey, the school's indoor record holder with a pole vault of 18-2 1/2, was ranked ninth in the world with a season-best height of 19-5 1/ 2. The clearance was the fourth best in the world and second among American vaulters.

Tom Gerding, a four-time All-American and Minnesota's first in a sprint event, was ranked ninth in the United States in the 400-meters after posting a career-best 45.38 at the Big Ten Championships and winning the Drake Relays. Gerding also ran on two of the top 15 4x400 U.S. relay teams this past year. His gold medal World University Games quartet ran a 3:02.83, while the Golden Gopher All-American foursome of Gerding, Mitch Potter, Mikael Jakobsson and Andy Wohlin ran a 3:04.12 at the NCAA Championships.

Minnesota's 4x800 relay team of Brian Meyer, Toby Henkels, Jason Owen and Zach Edmonson, which placed second at the Drake Relays, ran the nation's second fastest time of 7:21.44.
