MINNESOTA SWIMMING MOVES TO NINTH AFTER DAY TWO

theThe University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team moved into the top ten at the 2001 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas. The Gophers moved up three places in the overall standings, led by top eight finishes in four events.

Senior diver Dan Croaston was Minnesota's top finisher of the day, taking sixth place in the 3-meter diving competition. Sophomore Jeff Hackler took seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a career-best time of 53.89. Another sophomore, Todd Smolinski, placed eighth with a time of 47.23. Smolinski and Hackler also joined juniors Chad Krastins and Ricardo Dornelas to take eighth in the 200 medley relay.

Freshman Martin Gustavvson won consolation finals in the 100 breast to place ninth overall. The 800 freestyle relay earned valuable points for Minnesota with a 14th place finish.

Texas is running away with the meet. The Longhorns have dominated every relay and have set several new NCAA, American, US Open and Texas A&M pool records.

The meet continues tomorrow with the final day of prelims beginning at noon at the Texas A&M REc Natatorium.
