GOPHER SOFTBALL EXTENDS WINNING STREAK TO SEVEN GAMES

GopherThe Minnesota softball team extended its current winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of IUPUI on Tuesday in Indianapolis, defeating the Jaguars by scores of 3-0 and 3-1. The Gophers are 19-9-1 for the season.

In the opener, first-year pitcher Piper Marten threw her second straight shutout, limiting the Jaguars to three hits and striking out a career-high 13 batters. Christine Lindberg gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead in the third inning by stealing home on a botched squeeze play. Hailee Nanchy hit a run-scoring triple in the fourth inning to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead, and Shelly Nichols drove in Allie Fisk with a single in the seventh inning to conclude the scoring. Angel Braden had three of Minnesota's eight hits.

Minnesota broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the seventh inning to complete the doubleheader sweep. Angie Recknor singled to deep shortstop, and was replaced at first base by Shannon Brophy. Tammi Hays walked, and the runners were advanced to second and third on a sacrifice by Anne Thul. Amy Hafemeyer bounced a full-count pitch up the middle for a single, scoring Brophy to give Minnesota a 2-1 lead. Hafemeyer was thrown out trying for second base on the throw home. Allie Fisk followed with a triple to the left-field fence, scoring Hays with the game's final run. Recknor pitched a complete-game five-hitter, striking out eight batters.

The Gophers have added two games to their road trip. Minnesota will play a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at Indiana State beginning at 3 p.m. (EST).
