wThe University of Minnesota baseball team defeated Iowa State University Wednesday night for the 73rd time in school history, by a score of 9-0. It was the final time the Golden Gophers and Cyclones would take the field together, since ISU declared this season to be its final for baseball. Freshmen Craig Molldrem and Jeff Moen</ a> combined to blank the Cyclones in front of over 600 faithful at Siebert Field in Minneapolis. Sophomore Scott Welch homered for the fifth time this season, as the Golden Gophers improved to 29-15 in 2001.

Minnesota capitalized on two Iowa State errors in the second inning, and tacked five runs on the board. A run in the fifth, Welch's two-run shot in the sixth and one more in the eighth, helped the Golden Gophers avenge an earlier loss to the Cyclones in Ames, Iowa.

Senior Josh Holthaus ripped three hits for Minnesota and scored twice, while Molldrem and Moen walked just one Iowa State batter between them to pick up the win and the save, respectively. For Molldrem, it was his second win this season, and for Moen, his second save.

The Golden Gophers finished 73-27 all time versus the Cyclones, and 9-7 since 1990.

First place Minnesota will travel to third place Ohio State this weekend to battle for pecking order in the Big Ten Conference. The two schools have split every series dating back to 1993, with Minnesota holding a slim edge 13-12 over the last eight seasons.
