GOLDEN GOPHER ATHLETES CAPTURE THREE TITLES AT DRAKE RELAYS

Marc Johannsen won his second Drake Relays high jump title with a leap of 7 feet, one inch. Johanssen also took third place in the men's special invitational high jump. Senior Tom Gerding won his first Drake Relays title with a NCAA provisional time of 45.63 in the special 400m. Mikael Jakobsson, a freshman from Sweden, won the special invitational 400m hurdles with a NCAA provisional time of 51.09. This was the first race Jakobsson has participated in during the outdoor season.

The three event winners were not the only Minnesota highlights at the Relays. The 4x400m relay of Gerding, Bob Quade, Adam Steele and Andy Wohlin, provisionally qualified for NCAA Championships with a 3:06.79 in prelims. They took 4th place in finals with a time of 3:07.53. Two other Golden Gophers relays took second place. The 4x800 (Brian Meyer, Toby Henkels, Jason Owen and Zach Edmonson) took runner-up honors with their time of 7:21.44. Jeremy Polson, Will McComb, Martin Robeck and Neil Hanson combined to take second in a very tight race in the 4xMile relay with a time of 16:45.09. The distance medley relay (Polson, Quade, Edmonson and Hanson) also placed in the top ten with an eighth place finish.

Several other individuals fared well for the Gophers and placed in the top 10. Senior Mark Fahey< /a> took 10th in the hammer and broke the school record along the way with his toss of 190-5. Fellow senior Jason Owen placed ninth in the university 800m with a 1:53.98. Sophomore Toby Henkels took third in the special invitational 800m with a 1:51.16.
