GOLDEN GOPHERS DOMINATE MINNESOTA CLASSIC

BieThe University of Minnesota men's track and field team had an outstanding day at their only home outdoor meet of the season. Golden Gopher athletes won 12 of 18 events on a beautiful, sunny day on Bierman Track.

Minnesota athletes went one, two, three in both the 1500m and the hammer. Senior Jason Owen< /a> won the 1500m with a time of 3:52.06, Neil Hanson was right on his heels at 3:52.32 and Josh DoBell, running unattached, finished in 3:53.06.

In the hammer, Mark Fahey tossed the ball 186-8, Lynden Reder< /a> finished second in 177-9 and Ben Meyer placed third with a 173-2.

Freshman Jason Swenson</ a>, competing unattached, won the javelin with a throw of 188-5, showing promise for the future of the Golden Gopher track team. Sophomore Omar Clemmons won the long jump with a leap of 23-10 1/4. Andy Wiberg took first in the 400m with a time of 48.34. Martin Robeck, a Minnesota freshman came from behind in the last 200 meters of the 800m to win with a time of 1:51.63. Senior Bob Quade also won the 400 hurdles in 51.96.

Tom Gerding won the 200m for the second week in a row with a time of 21.04. Erik Quam won the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:32.82.

Minnesota's multi-event athletes fared well in several events. Lyndon McDowell won the 110 hurdles in 14.71. He also took second in the javelin. Jesse Madsen took fourth in the shot put with a toss of 46-9 1/2, 15th in the 100m and seventh in the pole vault.

Minnesota relays were on fire. The 4x100m (Matt Taylor, Andy Wiberg, Ben Taylor and Tom Gerding) relay opened the meet winning with a time of 40.69. The 4x400m relay (Bob Quade, Martin Robeck, Tom Gerding and Andy Wohlin) closed the meet for the Gophers with a winning time of 3:11.69.

Two of the events Minnesota athletes did not win were won by Minnesota alumni. Staffan Strand, a six time Big Ten champion while at Minnesota, won the high jump with a leap of 7-4 1/2. Tyrone Minor took first in the 100m dash with a time of 10.42. Olympian and former Gopher Keita Cline took second with a time of 10.54.

Today's meet was great preparation for the Big Ten Championships that will take place next weekend in Bloomington, Ind. Full results from today's meet follow. Results
