University of Minnesota senior Jeremy Polson placed eighth in the 10,000-meter run at the 2001 Big Ten Championships. Polson's time was 30:28.10, nine seconds over his personal best. The event closed the first day of the championships with the Golden Gophers in eighth place with two points.
Earlier in the day, senior Mark Fahey took eighth in the hammer throw for Minnesota's other point with a toss of 182-5. Lynden Reder and Ben Meyer were just out of scoring position in ninth and tenth.
Sophomore Jayme Pantekoek is in ninth place after five events with 3,365 points in the decathlon. He recorded a career-best high jump of 6-0 3/4. He is just 40 points out of scoring position with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m to go tomorrow. Junior Jesse Madsen was forced to withdraw from the decathlon after injuring his heel in the high jump. He was in sixth place at the time.
In addition to the final five events of the decathlon, Minnesota athletes will compete in the 4x100m relay, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 110m hurdle and 400m hurdle prelims, as well as the long jump, high jump and discus finals. Mark Fahey will be looking to defend his discus title and Marc Johannsen is a favorite in the high jump.
