GOPHER MEN MOVE INTO THIRD AFTER SIX EVENTS

OutdoAided by two top-eight finishes in the high jump and a second-place finish in the discus, the Minnesota men's track and field team has moved into third place after six events at the 2001 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Senior Mark Fahey took second in the discus with a throw of 173-7. Fellow senior Marc Johannsen placed third in the high jump with a leap of 6-11 1/2. Junior Lyndon McDowell placed in the top eight for the second time today, taking sixth in the high jump with a career-best 6-9 3/4.
The Golden Gophers are now in third place with 31 points. They are just 14 points behind the leader, Purdue.
In addition to the outstanding field event performances, five Golden Gopher athletes have qualified for two of tomorrow's sprint finals. Senior Tom Gerding ran the second fastest time in the 400m prelims (46.57) to automatically qualify. Freshman Adam Steele had one of the fastest times in his heat to also automatically qualify for tomorrow's 400m finals with a time of 46.93, a new career-best. Sophomore Andy Wohlin qualified by time, also with a career-best of 47.32. Matt Taylor and Steve Burkholder both qualified for finals in the 100m. Taylor ran a time of 10.71 and Burkholder ran a 10.81.
The 800m, 200m and 400m hurdles preliminaries are yet to be contested today. Toby Henkels, Zach Edmonson, Brian Meyer and Jason Owen will run the 800m. Matt Taylor and Tom Gerding will run the 200m. Mikael Jakobsson and Bob Quade will run the 400m hurdles, the last men's event to be contested this evening. It is slated to begin at 6:20 p.m.
