Hagen, a senior at Montevideo High School won the 50 freestyle at the 2001 Minnesota State High School swimming and diving championships. He also holds the state record in that event and recorded an automatic NISCA All-American time. In addition, Hagen was the state runner-up in the 100 free and was on the third place 200 free relay team. He is coached by Mark Johnson.
"We are counting on Mike to fill the void left by Grant Butler and Alex Massura, not just in the sprints, but especially on the sprint relays," Dale said. "He should be a mainstay on the 200 free relay for years to come."
The Golden Gophers finished the 2000-01 season with a 5-1 overall dual meet record, including their third consecutive unblemished Big Ten season. They blew away the competition at the conference meet, winning by nearly 300 points. Minnesota loses five seniors from the team, Butler, Massura, Big Ten 200 fly champion Keam Ang, Tim Sheely and multiple-Big Ten Champion diver, Dan Croaston.
