While Potter and a handful of other Minnesota athletes were in Ames, the distance medley team was competing in South Bend, Indiana. The team of Bob Quade, Toby Henkels, Ryan Ford and Andrew McKessock set a new school record on their way to reaching the NCAA automatic qualifying time. Their time of 9:39.61 was good enough for a third place finish in a race that saw six teams run the automatic qualifying time.
Also in Ames, Sophomore Chris Dixon achieved the NCAA provisional standard in the triple jump in taking first place with a jump of 51-6 1/4. Freshman Karl Erickson placed second in the shot put with a throw of 53-9 and sophomore Lynden Reder took third in the weight throw with a toss of 62-8.
Up next are the NCAA championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas on March 8-9. Potter is the lone individual who has automatically qualified, and the distance medley is the only relay. The 4x400-meter relay team will also compete as they currently have the second fastest time in the nation. Provisional qualifiers who will have to wait and see if they also will be competing include Karl Erickson, Will McComb, Lynden Reder, Kevin Netzer and Chris Dixon.
