Gophers Move to Florida State Invitational Semifinals

sincTallahassee, Fla. - The Minnesota Golden Gophers advanced to the semifinals of the Florida State Invitational with an 8-2 over Massachusetts Saturday. It was the most runs Gold Country had scored since a 10-1 victory over Northern Illinois on Feb. 9. The Gophers will take on No. 8 and defending Big Ten champions Michigan Sunday at 10 a.m.

The Gophers fell behind 1-0 to Massachusetts (8-7), but scored two runs in the fourth inning, four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to up their record to 18-4 on the season. Tammi Hays, Jordanne Nygren and Hailee Nanchy led the barrage at the plate. Hays was 3-for-4 with thee runs scored, Nygren was 2-for-3, while Nanchy hit her second home run of the season.

Piper Marten pitched 4 2/3 innings, striking out six, to up her record to 12-3. Marten also scored two runs in the victory.

In the final game of pool play, Marten and Lyn Peyer combined for Minnesota's second no-hitter of the season, to down Pittsburgh 1-0. Marten relieved Peyer after the rookie started the game and walked the only two batters she faced. Marten went on to throw the complete-game shutout, striking out 13.

Shelly Nichols drove in Hays in the first inning for the Gophers lone run, while leaving 12 base runners on base.

Marten also no-hit Boston University on Feb. 15, when she struck out a school-record 15 hitters.
