Former Men's Swimming Coach William Heusner Passes Away

Former University of Minnesota men's swimming coach William Heusner passed away Friday in East Lansing, Mich. He was 75. Heusner came to Minnesota in 1957 after a two-year stint at Southern Illinois. While serving as the Golden Gophers coach, Heusner resurrected the men's swimming team from the bottom of the Big Ten, to a third-place finish at the NCAA championships before his departure in 1962. He then went on to coach the U.S. Olympic Team in 1962. Heusner coached Minnesota swimming standouts including NCAA champions Steve Jackman and Bud Erickson and NCAA Champion and U.S. Olympic Team member Virgil Luken. He also coached All-Americans John Bergman, Bill Milota and David Peterson.

An outstanding athlete at Northwestern, Heusner was a three-time Big Ten Champion and a two-time NCAA Champion. He was named an All-American for six consecutive years in a total of 21 events. Heusner was awarded Northwestern's Men's Outstanding Athletic Achievement Award in 1947 and in 1949. Heusner was a member of the 1948 Olympic Team and the 1951 Pan-American Games.

Heusner earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics in 1949 and a master's degree in physical education, both at Northwestern. Heusner went on to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in physical education, physiology and statistics in 1955. Heusner was a professor for 37 years, 27 of which were at Michigan State University.

Heusner gained national recognition receiving such honors as the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Service to Aquatics Award, the Michigan Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Outstanding Service Award and the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association Service Award for contributions to the Sport of Swimming.
