Minnesota has 17 letterwinners returning from a team that won its second straight Big Ten title. The Golden Gophers finished 40-22 in 2003 and advanced to the NCAA Regionals, where they won their first NCAA Tournament game since 2000.
The Golden Gophers also welcome eight true freshmen to the program. Joining the eight true freshmen are five freshmen who redshirted the 2003 season for Minnesota. Minnesota also has seven seniors returning this season, 10 juniors and seven sophomores.
Highlighting the returnees are the two returning first team All-Big Ten players in centerfielder Sam Steidl (Alexandria, Minn.) and lefthander Glen Perkins (Stillwater, Minn.). Perkins, who set a single-season record for strikeouts last season, was also named Second-Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball Magazine and Freshman All-American for the 2003 season.
Minnesota also returns two second team All-Big Ten honorees in designated hitter Andy Hunter (West St. Paul, Minn.) and reliever Jeff Moen (Glenwood, Minn.), along with third team All-Big Ten righthander Matt Loberg (Anoka, Minn.).
